ANNE DESMET

Cyclical nature of ruin and regeneration. A ruin is a reminder to the viewer of the passage of time since it's pristine original and its disintegration. The viewer constructs their own version of the original from their imagination.

This series of works is delicately displayed with pins away from the paper within a frame. The viewer is encouraged to examine the paper itself, the physicality of the work, you see that it is not separate pieces, it's all one circle.

Changing colours and compositions of advertising hoardings in Nigeria. Posters pasted everywhere metamorphasize into something else through wear and tear by humans and weather. Mirroring these processes, collage of found paper and paint are left to bake in the sun and soak in the rain. No text or information, all about the material and process.

WE FACE FORWARD

Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester
June 2012

Themes of change - destruction, deterioration, ruin and damage and also transformation, regeneration, renovation in relation to West Africa. Finding beauty where others perhaps only find only pain and destruction. This is art.
It is not about suffering, nor is it a publicity or charity stunt - there is a lot more to Africa.
