PRIVATE VIEW

TONIGHT WAS OUR END OF YEAR SHOW.
THERE WAS A GREAT TURN OUT, AND ALTHOUGH THE SHOW IN TERMS OF AN EVENING EVENT, COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ORGANISED, IT TURNED OUT QUITE WELL. I ALSO HAD GOOD RECEPTION FOR MY WORK.

I'M GOING TO PASTE A CHAIR LIKE I DID THE WALL, AND SIT IT FACING THE WORK. VIEWERS WILL WALK INTO THE EXHIBITION WITH THE CHAIR TO THEIR LEFT AND THE WORK TO THE RIGHT.

I DON'T KNOW WHETHER I WANT TO INVITE PEOPLE TO SIT ON THE CHAIR OR NOT..
I DON'T THINK I DO, WELL I WON'T ASK OR INVITE PEOPLE TO SIT DOWN, BUT I SUPPOSE IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IF THEY DO..

THE CHAIR WILL BE AN EXTENSION OF THE PASTED WORK. JUST AS IT HAS CREPT ONTO THE WALL, AND THEN CREPT ONTO THE FLOOR, IT HAS TAKEN OVER AN ITEM OF FURNITURE. IT IS GIVING AN OBJECT, AND THE WORK A NEW CONTEXT.

I SEE IT LIKE A HYPERREALITY, MATERIAL MADE FOR A PURPOSE (TO ADVERTISE AND INFORM) TAKEN FAR OUT OF CONTEXT, WHERE IT DOESN'T COMMUNICATE OR GIVE ANY INFORMATION, THEN TRANSFORMED INTO AN OBJECT WITH A NEW FUNCTION. LIKE LICHTENSTEIN'S DINNERWARE.
BIG DAY TODAY!

AFTER GETTING OVER MY RAGE OVER BEING TOLD THAT MY TWO DAYS OF WORK PAINTING THE ENTIRE STUDIO ON EVERYONE ELSE'S BEHALF VERY THOROUGHLY AND STARTING WORK ON THE FLOORS, WAS COMPLETELY VOID BECAUSE OUR FIRST YEARS SHOWS BASICALLY DON'T MATTER AND THEY NEEDED THE PAINT FOR THE DEGREE SHOW... MY SHOW HAS TURNED OUT BETTER THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEFORE.

MY AREA OF THE FLOOR WAS LEFT UNPAINTED SO IN A RARE EPISODE OF SPONTANEITY, I STARTED PASTED NEWSPAPER AND POSTERS ONTO THE FLOOR AND WALLS IN MY SPACE. I ALMOST WANTED A MEMBER OF STAFF TO TRY AND STOP ME SO I COULD VENT TO THEM.

ANYWAY, THIS OPENED UP A WHOLE NEW AVENUE OF MY WORK, AND MADE ME WONDER WHY I HAVE NEVER WORKED ON A LARGE SCALE BEFORE, PHYSICALLY LAYERING IMAGES OVER EACH OTHER ASWELL AS CUTTING THEM INTO COMPOSITIONS. THE WATER AND GLUE TURNED THE NEWSPAPER SEE-THROUGH, SO THE IMAGE ON THE OTHER SIDE, AND BEHIND IT SHOWED THROUGH, GIVING A LAYERED EFFECT. 

I USED THE SAME TECHNIQUES AS BEFORE, USING HORIZONTAL LINES, AND REARRANGING AREA OF TEXT SO THE FONTS ARE STILL THERE BUT THEY DON'T SAY ANYTHING.

I HAVE THIS AREA OF BUSY, UNCONTROLLED WORK ALONGSIDE MY OTHER WORKS ON TRACING PAPER, WHICH ARE TIDY AND CONTROLLED IN CONTRAST.

I LIKE THE OVERALL UNTIDY FEEL OF THE WORK, WITH THE WORK ON PEGS AS WELL.

I ALSO DECIDED NOT TO USE THE LIGHTS. THE PUSH LIGHTS DO NOT ILLUMINATE THE WHOLE WORK, AND THE WORK CAN'T BE HELD FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE LIGHTS -  WHICH WAS THE ONLY REASON I WANTED THE LIGHTS IN THE FIRST PLACE. ALSO, THE ROOM WILL BE TOO BRIGHT, AND I THINK THEY LOOK GOOD BY THEMSELVES.


















BASICALLY, IT HAS TAKEN A SHIT COUPLE OF DAYS TO MAKE MY SHOW THE BEST IT COULD BE.

WE'RE GETTING CLOSE TO THE FINAL WEEK AND THE LAST FEW STUDIO DAYS BEFORE THE SHOW. I'VE DECIDED ON THE PIECES OF WORK I'M USING IN MY SHOW AND I'M WAITING ON MY LIGHTS TO ARRIVE IN THE POST - SO I'M FOCUSING ON THE PIECES OF WRITING I HAVE TO DO FOR NEXT WEEK.

MY WORK IS MAINLY ABOUT VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND CREATING NEW COMPOSITIONS FROM PUBLICATIONS AND GRAPHICS I FIND AESTHETICALLY INTERESTING, RECOMBINING THEM INTO COMPOSITIONS THAT DO NOT COMMUNICATE ANYTHING. THESE PUBLICATIONS ARE ADVERTS AND ARE DESIGNED TO GIVE INFORMATION AND TO PERSUADE, I HAVE TAKEN THAT COMMUNICATION AWAY SO THE VIEWER ONLY VIEWS THE COLOURS, SHAPES AND SURFACE QUALITIES, WHICH COMMUNICATE IN A VERY DIFFERENT WAY.

MY FINAL PIECE WILL BE A CULMINATION OF ALL THE VISUAL REALIZATIONS I HAVE HAD DURING THE LAST TERM. I HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH VARIOUS MATERIALS AND PROCESSES TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKS BEST WITH THE MARKS, COLOURS AND TEXTURES MY WORK CREATES. I FOUND THAT TRACING PAPER ENHANCES THE COLOURS AND SURFACE QUALITIES THAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES IN MY WORK, AND ALSO ALLOWS IT TO BE ILLUMINATED WITH JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF LIGHT. (FINGERS CROSSED THE PUSH LIGHTS ARE GOOD ENOUGH)
